Site Redesign

The scope of this machine was originally going to be limited to hosting a collection of miscellaneous services that I use, but when I had to deploy Nginx anyway, I figured it might as well serve up some HTML. For a while, you'd land on a page inspired by the Geocities era of the web, but I decided to trash that design and put things more in line with my actual preferences. I like websites that embrace a minimal design but adopt sensible modern enhancements. In stark opposition to much of today's web, sites in this vein are private, performant, information-dense, and fast. Consequently, they load quicker from anywhere, especially in areas with slow connections. Minimalist pages are also closer to plain-text files, ideal for human readers and terminal-based tools. To that end, I aspire to keep CSS minimal and JavaScript entirely absent from these pages. Some modern features will be implemented, like automatically displaying in 'light' or 'dark' mode according to the user's browser preferences.

While I decided to adopt this new aesthetic, I still love exploring those old Geocities-type sites occasionally. If you're nostalgic for the old web, https://wiby.me is a search engine that finds fun ones to poke around.
